Carol Bly’s Letters from the Country is a quietly powerful collection of essays that blends wit, wisdom, and sharp social observation from the perspective of rural Minnesota. It’s a compassionate and provocative meditation on American values, culture, and conscience, especially as seen through the lens of small-town life. Set against the backdrop of a small Midwestern town, these essays grapple with themes of justice, community, complacency, and hope. The soul of small-town America is found within these pages.

About the Author:

Carol Bly (1930–2007) was a fiercely intelligent and deeply moral voice in American literature, best known for her essays and short stories that reflect the complexity, beauty, and ethical struggles of rural life in Minnesota. Her writing is rooted in compassion and conscience, often addressing how individuals respond to cruelty, indifference, or injustice—not with sentimentality, but with courage and imagination.

Born in Duluth, Minnesota, Bly spent much of her life in the small towns and countryside that inspired her most enduring work. She was the former wife of poet Robert Bly, but made a name all her own as a celebrated author, teacher, and speaker. In addition to Letters from the Country, she published short story collections, works on writing craft, and essays that appeared in major publications and anthologies.

A signed copy of her work is a special artifact—not only of Minnesota literary history, but of a writer who believed that stories could make people braver, kinder, and more awake to the moral dimensions of life.
