Who Owns America? by Walter J. Hickel is a thought-provoking and bold critique of land ownership, resource control, and political power in the United States. As the former governor of Alaska and U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Hickel witnessed firsthand the battle between corporate interests, government policies, and the environment. In this book, he argues for a radical rethinking of how America’s natural wealth should be managed—placing the rights of the people above unchecked private and federal control. Written in the wake of the environmental movement’s rise in the 1970s, Hickel’s insights remain strikingly relevant today. Whether you’re a history buff, a political thinker, or an environmental advocate, this book challenges you to reconsider who truly benefits from America’s vast natural resources—and who should. Read it to find out what good ideas are being ignored by those in power.

Let’s face it. If you’re getting kicked out of Nixon’s cabinet for having too much integrity, (as Walter J. Hickel did) that’s probably a sign you were on the right side of history. Hickel was pushing back against policies that prioritized corporate profits over public land, and Nixon didn’t like that kind of dissent. Getting fired by Nixon turned out to be Hickel’s badge of honor.
And given how things turned out for Nixon… well, let’s just say Hickel didn’t go down with the ship!
